Social Anxiety Disorder, when it first appeared in the DSM III in 1980, wasn’t thought to have much of a negative effect on the people who had it. But as more research was done, it was discovered that social anxiety disorder could actually wreak havoc on someone’s life. From shying away from higher education to being unable to attend social events, people with SAD experience intense anxiety and dread when faced with any sort of social situation- sometimes even ones that take place away from people, like on the computer.
